Happy Record Store Day!

Today — Saturday, 21 April 2012 — is the fifth annual Record Store Day. Basically, it’s a celebration of the small, independent music sellers, and it’s all full of special offers, free stuff, discounted prices, and some unique items that won’t be available any other time! You can learn more about the concept on the Record Store Day website or Facebook page. They also have published a list of stores that are participating in today’s event, so you can see if there are any in your area!

If you don’t have any participating local stores, you can take a moment to reflect on how sad the current state of the music industry is, such that so many small retailers have been forced to shut down over the past few decades. But then, cheer up! Because several online distributors or labels are also offering special Record Store Day deals, and for your convenience I am collecting a few of those here…

Patac Records announced on their Facebook page: “Found a ton of old distro 7″s I haven’t seen in years. Since it’s Record Store Day, any orders I get today will have free stuff!”

Russian doom metal label group Solitude Productions/Bad Mood Man Music/Slow Burn Records announced that they have some rare items that are nearly out of stock, which will be made available today: “We collected sold out releases from our distributors and they became available in our web store from 0:00 (Moscow time, GMT +4). (Ocean of Sorrow Mystery of Winter, Reido F:/all, Ea II, Ea Au Ellai, Ekklesiast Cold, Catacombs Echoes Through The Catacombs, Hierophant The Tome, Tales Of Dark Fragile Monuments, Comatose Vigil Narcosis (EP)). Availability of these positions will be strictly limited (2-4 pieces of each only), so we advise to be fast if you are interested in ordering some of them.”

Furthermore, they’ve indicated that a free gift will be enclosed with any order placed today: “Every customer who will make an order on April, 21st will receive additional bonus: our promo compilation 2011 which has been already distributed in January (if you already have one, please, mention this in comment to your order).”

Canadian promotion/booking company Blacktooth Entertainment of Toronto (website/Facebook page) have put together a free compilation you can download, to celebrate both Record Store Day and the upcoming Death Metal Decapitation 2 festival, featuring some of the biggest names in extreme metal from Ontario and Quebec!

Included on this compilation are a few songs by each of the following: Derelict, Deamon, Nephelium, The Unborn Dead, and Blastmycosis. You can grab the free download from the festival Bandcamp page, here.

For further details on the festival, which is taking place on the 4th of May in Toronto, check out the Facebook event page.

One of the most highly anticipated releases that is exclusive to Record Store Day this year is definitely the Feistodon split — which features Mastodon covering “A Commotion” by Feist, and Feist covering Mastodon’s “Black Tongue” — and being sold as a limited-edition 7″ single at participating Record Store Day record stores.

If you aren’t able to get your hands on a copy of this, you can now stream both songs from this split via Soundcloud: Feist’s version of “Black Tongue” is here, and Mastodon’s “A Commotion” cover is here.

British modern metal label Basick Records is offering a discount on any purchases through their online store today: if you use the promo code RECORDSTOREDAY when making any purchase at their webstore, you’ll get 25% off your entire order!

Pennsylvanian underground metal distributor Relapse Mail Order (a division of the Relapse Records label) is offering a 10% discount on any vinyl purchases through their webstore today!

This is not necessarily a Record Store Day-specific deal, because it’s running from yesterday (20 April) through Tuesday (24 April), but I wanted to make sure to pass this one along as well: enter the promo code FREESHIP420 when you make any purchase from Cvlt Nation at their merch store!

And… Throatruiner Records is also offering a free shipping deal! Any orders placed today for 30€ or more, will receive free shipping when using the promo code RSDMMXII at their webstore.

Also not Record Store Day specific, but Swimming With Sharks Records from Dallas, Texas has announced two separate sales: all purchases of digital albums have been discounted to $4.20, and all physical copies are now priced at just $6.66!

The digital download sale is running through the end of the day on Sunday, 22 April; no end time is specified for the physical CD sale. Both offers are available on purchases from the label’s Bandcamp page. Check out their official website for more info.
