Good afternoon!
As some of you may recall, last year I participated in a charity event called Birdathon for Birders of Palestine. Well, the Feminist Bird Club is at it again, and my local Antifascist Bird Society has once again formed a team to participate.
Birdathon for Mutual Aid Disaster Relief
presented by Feminist Bird Club
From Valley of Steel:
I’m birding for a better world! Can you cheer me on?
I’m excited to be a part of Feminist Bird Club‘s Birdathon for Mutual Aid Disaster Relief! Our birding community is coming together to celebrate the inclusive nature of bird joy while fundraising for Mutual Aid Disaster Relief; a grassroots disaster relief network based on the principles of solidarity, mutual aid, and autonomous direct action.
Please help me reach my goal by leaving a flat donation or making a pledge to support my birding efforts! Your support will help provide critical funds for those who are affected by climate disasters all over the world.
Thank you for considering and stay tuned for my birding updates! 🐦
To donate to Mutual Aid Disaster Relief through my Birdathon participant page (here), you may choose a flat amount OR you can pledge an amount per bird species I see and/or hear over the duration of the campaign (Friday the 16th through Monday the 19th). Either way, thank you very much for your support!
I’ve set a goal of 50 different bird species over the duration of the campaign — somewhat ambitious for this time of year, but it could happen, given that we’ve still got several straggling migrants making their way through southwestern Pennsylvania. For context, during last year’s Birdathon (which was held the same weekend), I hit a total of 42. Going to try extra hard to beat that number this year by venturing out to some different spots (and hoping for better weather this time around!)
Thanks!!
This campaign, organized by the Feminist Bird Club, is raising funds to support Mutual Aid Disaster Relief (MADR). MADR‘s work focuses on climate justice by uplifting and supporting those impacted on the front lines of the climate crisis, while also working to raise consciousness of the invisible and ongoing interconnected disasters of capitalism, colonialism, white supremacy, and all other forms of imperial violence. As the climate crisis continues to escalate and our government systems fail to address it, mutual aid networks like MADR are there to meet the needs of those affected most. Up to 20% of the Birdathon proceeds will go back into FBC to support our mission and chapter network.About the Beneficiary:
Mutual Aid Disaster Relief, a volunteer-led, grassroots, decentralized mutual aid network, started in its current iteration in 2016, when several veterans of past liberatory disaster relief mobilizations came together and laid the groundwork for a permanent network to respond to disasters. Their mission is to provide disaster relief based on the principles of solidarity, mutual aid, and autonomous direct action. They strive to build long-term, sustainable and resilient communities by working with, listening to, and supporting impacted communities, especially their most vulnerable members, to lead their own recovery. MADR responds to disasters, educates about community organizing as disaster preparedness and collaborative neighborhood crisis response, collects and disseminates lessons learned in the field, and supports and provides a connective tissue between other grassroots groups doing response work.
About the Organizer:
The Feminist Bird Club is a network of birding communities across the world, united by our mission to celebrate the people who love birds. We strive to make birding safe, accessible, affirming and joyful for everyone, especially for those demographics who haven’t historically had equitable access to the outdoors. Equally crucial is our mission to channel our passion for the environment towards creating sustainable change on this planet. We approach this through fundraising, mutual aid, grassroots conservation efforts and community action, and have raised over $250,000 for social justice causes since our inception in 2016.
