Umoja African Arts Company presents:

Saturday/Sunday 11-12 August 2012 | 11am-7pm both days | free admission

A little outside my normal sphere of reporting, admittedly, but I heard about this on WQED last week and it sounds really fascinating. In particular, they are conducting African drum workshops (demonstrating the construction and playing of the instruments) and a seminar called “West Africa’s Influence on Jazz” (which traces the history of American music back to its African roots).

More information on this festival can be found here, and a schedule of events here. RSVP here.

The First Annual Lawrenceville Rock All Night Tour (R.A.N.T.)

Saturday 11 August 2012 | everywhere in Lawrenceville | 12pm-2am | FREE!

Way too much is happening at this event for me to go into detail about all of it, but you can read this article in the Post-Gazette to learn more. Pretty much every venue imaginable in Lawrenceville (including the Allegheny Cemetery!) will be featuring local bands playing pretty much every genre imaginable. And it’s all FREE!

Just a few of the highlights include the “punk” show at Thunderbird Cafe with Del Rios, The Cheats, The Bloody Seamen (Captain Blackguts himself has informed me that, provided that it fits onstage, the band will be premiering their brand-new stage set-up — including an actual pirate ship!) and Dirty Charms; and the “metal” show at Cattivo (FB event page here) with Lady Beast, Solarburn, and Agnes Wired for Sound.

The R.A.N.T. Facebook page is here, full details and schedule (plus, RSVP) for the event here.

Screaming Crow Records cordially invites you to…

be a part of The Cheats‘ video shoot!

at the 31st Street Pub

3101 Penn Ave, Pittsburgh (Strip District)

Sunday 12 August 2012 | 6:00 pm | FREE admission, FREE pizza, FREE refreshments!

If you aren’t able to make it to the R.A.N.T. tour Saturday night, or if you end up missing The Cheats playing at Thunderbird because you were at one of the seven hundred other shows happening that night, OR if you just can’t get enough of watching The Cheats for free, come down to the Pub to join in the fun as the band films a video for their new single “Better than the Rest” (from their latest album Pussyfootin! — read the review here)!

More info/RSVP here.

Phew! Well, after all that, you sure as hell better not come whining to me if you are bored at ANY TIME over this weekend! Get out there and have some fun, damnit.

    • No problem, Lee! And it was nice getting to meet you last night, even if just briefly.

I haven’t had the chance to see Vega yet, but I’d like to — and after last night I know I’d love to see Solarburn again any time! Weeknights are kind of tough for me, living so far outside of the city as I do, but I’ll be sure to share this event, and will definitely try to make it there if I can!
