Happy Groundhog Day!

Hey! I know I promised recently that we’d be getting back to reviews soon. That was before I spent the majority of January just getting caught up on listening to stuff from 2016 so that I could belatedly finalize my list of the year’s best releases! But that’s finally online now, and our first review of 2017 is scheduled to be published tomorrow. First, though, it’s time for another quick news update.

In this edition: charity donations at Bandcamp; tour news from Katatonia, Conan, and North; album release news from Ever Circling Wolves; plus more news about new videos and shows!

This Friday, Stand with Bandcamp in Support of Immigrants/Basic Human Values

Bandcamp has announced that “all day this Friday, February 3rd (starting at 12:01am Pacific Time), for any purchase you make on Bandcamp, we will be donating 100% of our share of the proceeds to the American Civil Liberties Union, who are working tirelessly to combat these discriminatory and unconstitutional actions.”

You can read the website’s full statement here. If you’ve been considering making any music purchases, please take advantage of this! Much of the stuff we’ve written about here on Valley of Steel is available there, so you can poke around our archives if you need some suggestions!

Last year I wrote a review of Of Woe or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Gloom, the newest full-length by Finland’s Ever Circling Wolves. At that time, there was no official release date or record label lined up. Since then, though, the band have put together a deal with Cimmerian Shade Recordings, and the album finally saw the light of day on 27 January!

If you’re looking for something to purchase on Bandcamp on Friday, maybe consider this lovely gem:

Another album I wrote about last year was The Bones of a Dying World by If These Trees Could Talk. The band has just announced the release of a video for the song “Berlin” from that album! Enjoy:

Finally, I wanted to pass along this message to readers here in Pittsburgh. If you’re looking for a way to spend Super Bowl Sunday (February 5th) that doesn’t involve watching Tom Brady and the Patriots on TV, consider this as an alternative:

in their first-ever Pittsburgh appearance!
at the Rex Theater, 1602 E Carson St, Pittsburgh (South Side)
All Ages | $15 | Doors 7:00 / Show 8:00
